New Week Beginning Feb 28th

7/8th Grade World History
It's really hard to believe that this year is almost over.  I want to be sure that I train these students using the technology on the Macs at school.  For daily grades, I am monitoring their progress and work ethic on breaking down Chapter 13 into dynamic presentations.  There are many skills that go into creating one of these presentations. I have the computers reserved for the rest of this week, and I am very impressed with the work of all the students.  Even students who dislike book work are finding they have special talents.
The test grade will come from the final project with it's features of music, transitions and content.
Take a look at an unfinished presentation that belongs to Kandice Price.

New Week Beginning Feb 22nd

Sociology: Students will be writing from memory the poem by Robert Frost "Nothing Gold Can Stay"
They will also explain in writing what the poem means. (interpretation)
This grade will be taken on Feb. 23rd during 6th Period.
If your student misses this assignment, they will need to make it up after school.
(3 day time limit to make up)
We enjoyed Simon Birch's story and  how his size made him perfect to complete God's plan.
We will have a discussion about Simon and talk about other times a people have used their differences to fulfill God's plan.
Our next social issue will be have a scientific crossover.  It is about the importance of the CDC, their job and how they come together in times of crisis. We'll explore this through the story of the Ebola virus in a story called Outbreak.

7th/8th Grade World History
I have prepared an outline for students for Chapter 13. Last week we gained valuable background knowledge of the Crusades and the Plague. Now, students will create a dynamic Keynote presentation for each section of this Chapter. Strict criteria will be required from students. The final productions will be turned into a final presentation and shared with other teachers, students and parents.  I will help them each step of the way. If a student has his/her own Mac, it would be helpful if they could bring it to school during this project. I will keep the computers in my room at all times behind my desk until the end of the day. If your student would rather use a PC and has powerpoint installed on his computer, this will be fine as well.
We have 19 computers, but the entire school shares them, I just want to be certain everyone has a computer.  I will not permit any other student to touch your child's computer in my class.
Those who do not have computers, we will try to reserve the computers each day until this project is finished. It is so important that you bring your jump drive or blank disk during this project.
Some of you have these things in my classroom.
Thanks,
Ms. Ronna

Week Beginning Feb. 14

We will be out of school on Wednesday. If the boys win, we will get out early on Thursday, so this week, we'll get things done as time allows.

Sociology
We'll discuss the themes in The Outsiders.
We'll interpret the poem "Nothing Gold Can Stay" by Robert Frost
We'll recite the poem.

Each of these activities will be a grade.
1. Discussion ( Monday)
2. Interpretation (Monday and Tuesday)
2 Recitation (Tuesday)

Please ask your students in advance not to bring up anything to do with the school's financial situation in my classroom.
Our next upcoming Social Issue will be explored through the study of  Simon Birch.
This story deals with the physical differences between students. For example, Simon, is the smallest person in his class, but God has really big plans for him.

Week Beginning Feb. 7

Sociology
Monday- We should finish Joan of Arc (which is an enrichment to our study of Medieval Europe).
Next, we begin our next study, and it will be centered around The Outsiders.  The author was only 17 when she wrote the book. The rival between the Socs and the Greasers is classic. The major social issue in this study that divides the teens is socioeconomic status.
The author quotes a poem in the story.
"Nothing Gold Can Stay" by Robert Frost.
Students must be able to write the poem, say the poem and explain the meaning of the poem.  We will be doing so much of this in class. They will just need to practice a few times at home before the test. I'll post the date in advance.

In addition to the poem, there will be other grades on class discussion, quizzes and questions.

Nothing Gold Can Stay

Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leafs a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

10th Grade American History
We are beginning our study of World War I. We'll be on this topic for a while.  I have my own research and study that I do with students. Then, I present the other topics covered in the book about the direct influence the war had on America.
There will be two separate tests on this topic, as well as other grades taken along the way.
9th World History
We are beginning our study of the French Revolution with Les Miserables by Victor Hugo. This will set the stage for the events of our chapter and provide some background knowledge.

7th/8th Grade World History
We are beginning Chapter 13. It's like a Part II to Chapter 12. In this chapter we will explore Medieval Europe at its height and learn about the Crusades, more about Joan of Arc, the Plague and the troubles of the Church. We'll also learn more details about the way of life as Medieval Europe reached its height.
I plan to go in depth with this chapter. There will be lots of opportunities for grades, too. I'll keep you posted on big exams, but students should always be ready for pop tests in class. Remember reading the chapter is always suggested for homework. It really can make a world of difference.

Media Design
Students will be completing Project 1 soon. While they will continue on with their individual blogs, the students will begin a new project.  Each student will build a website for the Deer Hunt. The board will vote on the one that will be the Official Deer Hunt Website for Dixie Academy.

Art Show!

Parents and Students: I love Art. I believe some students express themselves through Art. This is why I try to weave some Art activities into my class.  Many students learn by putting information into an Art form.
Our local Art Show is March 11th.
You can help by encouraging your student to create something at home. I'll do my part by involving as many art opportunities as possible in my lessons during the upcoming weeks.
I sent out a call for students to bring new markers into class. I was so  happy to learn that the school is allowing us to order some art supplies, too. I just turned in my order for oil pastels and fresh markers.
Thanks so much for all your sacrifices to make sure your child gets the best educational opportunities available.
Ms. Ronna

My adorable 10th Graders are the first to complete their art project! They did an amazing job.

Here Comes A New Week

Reminder:  Sociology Class Posters (Students must bring poster board and other materials for their project or they will get a zero for each day we work on this.) Look back at the last post for more details on materials.

7/8th Grade World History (Test on Chapter 12 Friday)

9th Grade World History (Test on Chapter 20 Friday)

10th Grade American History (Test on Chapter 8 Friday)
We are working on our Art Project Monday and Tuesday. Please bring any items you wanted to include in the American West Art Project.

Media Design:  Benchmark Check on Tuesday for Project 1 and for your Individual Blogs.

Progress Report Time is very close.

Wrapping Up The Week

Sociology
We finished A Child Called It today.  We'll be doing posters promoting child abuse awareness. I will also allow students to do their posters on bullying if they choose since David suffered teasing and name calling at school.  Rather than his classmates offering friendship to David, who was being brutally abused at home, they called him names and left him out of fun activities.
Students who brought their supplies at the beginning of the year will already have their poster boards in my room, but not every student did this. Many of our class markers which went into one big box have been stolen. For this reason, please bring markers for your poster activity.
Other things you may want to bring, stick on letters, magazine cut outs, print outs from home computer of images,  the phone number to child abuse hotline for Barbour County.
PLEASE NO BLOODY OR INJURED CHILDREN IN PHOTOS. These posters will be displayed for all grade levels to see in the halls.
We will be doing these posters in class.
On Friday (tomorrow) I will give students some information about child abuse and bullying.  Each student will make a plan for the poster on white paper. It will be like a model of their poster.
We will begin the actual project on Monday.

Most Productive Class Reward January 25, 2011

Every now and then, a class deserves recognition for a highly productive day.  Today is one of those days, the ninth graders reminded me why I wanted to be a teacher today.  Not one student complained about the work. Every student was actively involved in the lesson and every student made me feel like they really cared about what I was teaching. These students were not squabbling with each other at any point during the class. They were focused. These are the types of students that I actively seek scholarships for. These are the types of students who I write recommendations for. Today was a great day in 9th Grade World History.
After the lesson, we had a pop quiz and the students did exceptionally well.
These are the students who were present today and made my day.

Letters

Dear Ms. Ronna,

So, today in my Professional Educator class, I had to do a writing sample. The topic was "The Best Teacher I Ever Had". I wrote about you. :) Thanks for being such a huge inspiration to me. In case my mom hasn't told you, I'm going to school to be a teacher. I'm so blessed to have had you, along with many of the other teachers at Dixie, to show me the way. Thanks for everything you have done for me and for every single student who has even had the privilege of calling you their teacher. I love you! You really are "The Best Teacher I Ever Had"!

Dear Ms. Ronna,

About a week ago my son stated how much he had learned in your class. In fact, more than he had ever learned in a class! It is so reassuring for a parent to hear these types of comments . I am thankful for a compassionate teacher like you!

Michelle Reeder

P.S. Thank you for loving my child.

From Taylor Dukes:

Mrs. Ronna

Mrs. Ronna teaches my child 2 classes.  I am amazed by what he has learned in her classes.  As a teacher, I know that not all children learn in the same way.  Mrs. Ronna takes this to heart.  Her classes are filled with opportunites for all learning styles.  My son and his friends shocked me by being able to recite the U.S. Presidents in order, thanks to the President's Rap.  The movies that she has selected this year have definitely helped the students better understand key concepts.  Our children do not have a clear understanding of what segregation was like.  The viewing of "Ruby Bridges" helped them to see how much life, especially in the south, has changed.

Mrs. Ronna deeply cares about each one of her students.  She celebrates their achievements and victories.  She listens to their problems and offers heartfelt advice.  I am very proud that my son has her as a teacher this year.  She is an asset to our school and to the teaching profession.
Sincerely,
Sharon Fenn

To Whom it May Concern:

Mrs. Ronna Williams is a very attentive teacher when it comes to her students.  She tries to work with each and every one of them personally.  She makes her classes fun so that the children want to learn.  She taught our oldest son his Sophomore and Junior years.  He missed her tremendously last year (his senior year); but she did visit all the kids last year when she had a chance.  We are so excited to have her back this year.  She currently teaches both of our high school children and they just love her.  Our youngest is a girl and she never wanted to apply herself very much in her studies until this year with Mrs. Ronna.  We thank God everyday for bringing this angel to our family and especially to the Dixie Academy family.
Sincerely,

Jason and Stephannie Hall

This Week

I want to make a blanket statement that covers all my history classes. READ READ READ! Read the chapter.

10th Grade American History
We are starting Chapter 8. It's all about the old west. It's one of my favorite things to teach. I created my own unit which covers all the material in the text, but also brings this section to life.  It will take us a while to get through this chapter. I believe it's worth taking our time and doing a complete study. This is such an important part of American History. To understand who we are, this period must be explored.
I will embed an art project in this chapter, so students have something to enter in the art show.

9th Grade World History
We are beginning Chapter 20 British and American Revolutions.  Students saw the backdrop of the Revolutionary War in our viewing of Roots. Now, they'll know the context for our study as we go into the details of the Revolution. I'll be using some movie clips from the HBO series JOHN ADAMS to show interpretations of events like the Boston Massacre.

7th/8th Grade World History
We are beginning Chapter 12 The Rise of Medieval Europe.  We are going to meet some interesting characters from history with names like Clovis and Pepin the Short. We'll watch a video about vikings!  I love teaching this chapter. We'll take a virtual field trip and explore a castle, and we'll learn all about the medieval church.

11th/12th Media Design
All students/groups have a benchmark check on Monday.  The date is non-negotiable, meaning if the student is absent, he/she must send in the evidence of their work anyway. Failure to do this will result in a zero. This will be the second grade in the grade book for this nine weeks. This week students will continue with their individual blogs on topics within the school. They will also be working, editing and creating their contest entries for the texting and driving projects.

Sociology
We'll finish watching Lord of the Flies (about 15 minutes). We'll have a short discussion about the sociological themes of the film including leadership, character and bullying.
We will continue our reading of "A Child Called It". Grades come from daily worksheets on our reading. We will have tests periodically that cover several chapters at once. I will post an announcement (one week in advance for tests).
